Letting Your Essence Shine Through

  1. Turn on the music and turn off the lights-move to the music and see what comes out.  Don’t watch yourself and worry about what it looks like.  No mirrors yet!! 
  2. Choose music that moves you-music that you can’t sit still through. 
  3. Dance to it again and again and then dance to it some more until it becomes natural. You don’t have to think about the movement, it just flows with the music. 
  4. Once you have the music and movement in your body, then use the mirror and/or video to refine it. Here are a few things to think about:
    • Add directional changes/staging
    • Add level changes & layering shimmies
    • Add your spice/ signature moves
    • Think about how you show feeling in an authentic way? Make sure there are moments in your dance that highlight this!

  1. Love this! Great advice that I will try! I need to get out of my head, when I Bellydance!
    How funny…when I’m teaching Zumba, I tell my students, ” I give you a recipe and you add your own spice” becuase they don’t need to follow me exactly, just the way their bodies want to move.
